The Eastern Lubber Grasshopper
South Florida is fertile ground for the Eastern Lubber Grasshopper (Romalea guttata). This primarily seasonal muncher of leafy plants typically arrives in early Spring and departs well into the Summer.
The nymphs are mostly black with a bright yellow stripe down their back and love to eat. Although they have a wide variety of plants in their diet, some of their favorites include the very popular ornamental crinum lilies and hibiscus shrubs.

When to Treat Your Lawn
What’s most important is to treat for the Eastern Lubber Grasshopper early, upon initial sightings when they are still in the nymph phase. Even then it typically requires 2 treatments, over a couple of weeks to try and interrupt their life cycle. Once they evolve to an adult stage they are almost impossible to control. Happy gardening!
