Mangrove trimming is a highly specialized skill, requires specialized certification and is one of the most governmentally controlled areas of tree trimming. The State Of Florida’s Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) and Miami Dade County’s Department of Environmental Resources Management (DERM) both govern the trimming of mangroves by local and State ordinances. Strict guidelines apply to the species that can be trimmed, the amount of height reduction, percentage of foliage removal and frequency of trimming are some of the aspects that are controlled. A “PMT” (Professional Mangrove Trimmers) license/certification is a State requirement and ensures the competency of the trimming. An “ISA” (International Society of Arboriculture) certification is the only Arborist Certification that supersedes a PMT and automatically qualifies a professional trimmer to trim mangroves.
