Deep look into Tree Trimming Miami Florida Video Transcription

On the Trimming side of our business we pride ourselves on extremely high quality tree work. We have very experience crews, the lead trimmer or foreman of each crew has been with this company for over 15 years.

They do this day in and day out. They have an excellent eye for shaping and balancing trees for diagnosing and recognizing problem areas in trees high risk situations with branches that may converged or rub against each other, branches that may be heavy and extend over the roof of the house or close to other structures over driveways, proximity to sidewalks and areas that involve pedestrian’s, over playgrounds, backyard play areas there’s a lot of considerations of what goes into deciding on how to trim a tree.

tree trimming miami florida picture

Again we pride ourselves on our crews  having that experience taking the time to evaluate  trees before they start to trim come up with the game plan and that also kind a general consensus between the  tree crews and myself. I typically review the jobs before the crews go out.

I’ll go over the details of what were going to do how were going to do it with the customer and then it’s my responsibility to convey that to each crew make sure they have the good understanding of what’s involved in each job and they go out and obviously perform the work and which I’ll typically supervise throughout a given job of trying to be there at the start to do a walk thru and discuss the particulars with the foreman and then turn them lose and then try to check them out once or twice throughout a job and certainly do a final review at the end.

One of the primary dangers and it does get a lot of attention perhaps not enough throughout the year every year, sadly we always hear about people getting electrocuted.

So one of the biggest dangers is the tree branches that come in close proximity or actually touching the power lines. And there is also misconceptions about people look up their power lines and the ones that are typically closest to the trees or the low heavy black insulated lines which are actually no danger most of that are communications and data cables that are no threat.

But above those looks like skinny little wires at the very top uninsulated are a lot of the primary electrical lines carrying high voltage and another misconception is that a lot of people think you have to come in contact with those lines before you get electrocuted the reality is you don’t you need only be close with a metal tool in your hand (a saw type situation).

The electricity is powerful enough to arc and jump and make that gap within a few feet and sometimes more, Very often that’s how people get hurt or killed is by reaching out trying to trim a branch knowing they’re not going to touch the power line but they don’t realized that they’re too close and they can make a connection and we read about it in the news.

I’ve seen in the news people dying in Dade Country, Broward County getting electrocuted. People should definitely be cautious and hire a professional.

Absolutely, including there are situations were we turn down that work. Even though we have the know how and we have the tools. Utility pruning is a specialty in itself and we’re limited on what we can do, a certain utility pruning must be done, by the power company’s tree service. We know our limitations but it is something we review. We look at it and I make a decision a head of time, yes we can handle this safety or if it is questionable at all we will pass and refer it to the power company.

The risk of do it yourself tree trimming video is part of an ongoing series geared towards educating South Floridians to carry out safety.

I’m Rick Barocas, I manage the tree division at One Two Tree.

The Tree Division is made up of three, three man tree crews. They’re out everyday trimming trees doing tree removals, stump grinding and all the services that we offer.

We stay busy covering all Miami-Dade, Broward and Monroe County. Our biggest demand is for quality pruning of trees.

Next to that we do get a pretty heavy demand of tree removals and then along with both of those there are situations where grinding stumps, and removal of stumps go along with the tree’s themselves so we do that as well.

A new whitefly species is defoliating tropical landscapes from plants to stately palms throughout Kendall and other areas of Miami-Dade County. One of 75 species found in Florida, it is identified as the “Gumbo Limbo Spiraling Whitefly” by Catharine Mannion, a specialist at the University of Florida’s Tropical Research and Education Center in Homestead.“These small, winged insects belonging to the Order of Hemiptera [aphids, scales and mealy
bugs] typically feed on the underside of leaves with needle-like mouthparts,” she reported in a recent bulletin.

An ominous warning that concluded: “Whiteflies can seriously injure host plants by sucking nutrients, causing wilting, yellowing, stunting, leaf drop, or even death.”

According to Mannion, the first Miami-Dade whitefly was collected in March 2009 from a Miami-Dade gumbo limbo tree, becoming the first report of the insect in the continental U.S.

About three times larger than other common whiteflies, the new species, believed to have originated in Central America, has spread from gumbo limbo to black olive, copperleaf, Brazilian pepper, cocoplum, wax myrtle, live oak, mango and several palm tree varieties, including areca and coconut palms.

“Since the initial find, there were numerous reports in Miami-Dade County, but now it has already spread into other South Florida areas outside Miami-Dade,” Mannion said, emphasizing the “Spiraling Whitefly” species is not the same creature as the “Ficus Whitefly” that causes defoliation and branch dieback of Florida ficus trees.

The extent of the gumbo limbo invasion was estimated to effect up to 120,000 trees in landscaped areas alone in county parks, according to Joe Maguire, the department’s natural areas manager.

Maguire said the whitefly invasion had spread widely in Matheson Hammock where part of its 80 acres has large stands of mahogany and gumbo limbo trees.

“This current gumbo limbo whitefly species is proving much more harmful to a wide range of plants and trees than the ficus tree whitefly in 2009,” Maguire said. “Even then, it proved extremely expensive ($50-$100 per tree) to provide insecticide extermination measures throughout all areas of county parks.”

Without any budget funds available for the new infestation, Maguire said it appears there is “little that can be done for the current infestation other than wait out the natural cycle of survival.”

Joseph Flores, a pest and lawn specialist for Kendall’s “One Two Trees” at 7256 SW 42 Terr., established in 1984, concurs.

“We are now finding the insect from as far south as Key West to Broward County,” he said. “As far as I know, the first discovery was along the Miami River. It then spread to Miami Beach, Coral Gables, Coconut Grove and Pinecrest. It began to show up only in gumbo limbo trees, but now it’s spread to different tropical plantings, including palm trees.

“Three of five calls we currently answer ask for inspections and treatment of whitefly infestation,” Flores added. “Treatments involving injections of the Arbor Jet system are the best to save the tree.”

Do-it-yourself chemical applications ($5.95 or $15.95 at a home supply store) are not as effective as injection because any application mix needs careful measurement.

“Homeowners can do more harm than good if they apply the wrong proportions,” Flores said.

His firm has contracted for treatments as high as $2,000 with quarterly re-injections that can run up to $500.

“I am very concerned; have it on my palm trees,” said Martha Backer who led a tree-saving project in West Kendall on SW 104th Street. “Black gunky stuff on the underside, and my avocado trees have had little white specks flying around for over a year since I saw them up by the Hammock’s Police Station.

“Also, you’ll see them up by the gumbo limbo trees lining SW 104th Street. So, yes, we have them in this neck of the woods.”

Pests are defined as any harmful, noxious or troublesome organism. Common pests include insects, mites, rodents, fungi and weeds that wreak havoc on people, plants, animals or the ecology in general.

How am I effected?

Pests and their negative effects on people, pests are injurious to health. Pests can act as carriers for allergens which irritate people with sensitive medical conditions. Pest’s fecal dropping and shed skin can also become airborne, contaminating the air we breathe in.PESTS AND THEIR NEGATIVE EFFECTS

This does not even include the bacteria that can be found on pests themselves. Common household pests such as cockroaches, rats and mosquitoes are

carriers for infectious diseases and must be exterminated lest they overrun a household.

In particular, cockroaches can slip through any crack in the walls, bringing with them bacteria such as salmonella and E. coli.

Rodents likewise carry salmonella on their bodies, leaving a trail of contamination on every surface.

Mosquitoes, on the other hand, carry dengue fever. As they breed in stagnant water, it is highly recommended that water containers be frequently used up and covered.

Food Sources Compromised

Not only one’s health that is affected.

Even our food sources are compromised by the airborne bacteria spread by pests, hence the need of tightly-sealing food containers.

food sources compromised

When one says pests, a common image would be crops ruined by the onslaught or rats, insects and weeds.

Another negative effect of pests is on agriculture in particular and the economy in general.

Pests have caused losses in virtually an unlimited number of crops.

A swarm of pests could ruin a whole season’s worth of planting and careful cultivation, leading to financial loss.

It comes as no surprise that pesticides and pest control management strategies are given much importance by farmers. However, this negative impact goes beyond agriculture.

Pests also affect plants and your lawn. Habitats that provide alternative hosts or preys may also harbor pests, thereby increasing the vulnerability of that habitat and the other organisms that live in it.

The ecology also suffers from the invasion of pests.pests affect plants

These pests directly prey on native fauna, decreasing or rendering extinct the number of their prey and upsetting the balance of ecology.

Pests also destroy the habitat of other organisms as well as natural resources, leading to reduction in water quality, increase in soil erosion and degradation of land, and destruction of native plants that provide food and shelter to native species or those endemic to the place.

Another way that these vermin can harm the ecology is through their competition with native animals for food and shelter. To a certain extent, pests can even poison native animals and pass on diseases, leading to the decline of certain animal and plant species.

The worst ecological scenario that can be imagined with regards to pests is the decreased number of native species, the degradation of their natural habitats and food, and their extinction.

In general, it is of no doubt that pests are nuisances in their own right, and should not be taken lightly or else the havoc they wreak would be unprecedented.

Rodents live in homes along with humans, and it requires serious attention before things get out of hand.

pest control miami flashlight inspection

Start with a good inspection to determine which type of rodent is present, and where they nest. Get a flash light and look around your house.
Typical evidence to look for in your home:

rat-droppings-pellets

Droppings

Rat droppings, fecal pellets are the most commonly encountered sign, serves as primary evidence to confirm rat infestation.

Even a small population of mice can produce thousand of droppings in a short period of time. Fresh droppings are dark in color and soft in texture, but after three days they harden and loose the dark color, age of droppings will tell you if your rodent problem is current.

Rodent Pathways

Rodent Pathways

Runways are usually evident in rodent infestations, rodents repeatedly use the same pathways between their nests and food sources.

Common pathways are  foundations, tree branches, electrical lines, pipe and sewer lines.

If you notice rodent pathways always have rub marks with them. Rub marks are grease marks created from oil and dirt on the rodent’s skin and often appear along wall areas next to runways.

Also, both rats and mice urinate frequently during their daily travels, a mouse is capable of depositing three thousand droplets in just twenty-four hours. Rodent urine is often deposited in their runways, and other areas they frequently visit.

rodent urineWhat’s that Smell?

Strong ammonia smell from there droppings and rodent odors.

It simply affirms larger rodent infestations. The more noticeable the smell is, the more rats there are.

Cats and dogs may excitedly sniff and probe an area where rodents are present and hunt them down, which is bad, because we don’t know where it has been and what decease it’s carrying.

rodents make Strange Sounds

Rodent Tunes

Wait…Did you hear that?

Various annoying sounds produced by rodents and their young.

  • high pitched squeaks
  • gnawing sounds
  • scratching and digging noises

These sounds can commonly be heard during night inspections.

rodent bite marksBite Marks

Rodent bite marks are often evident.

Rats can gnaw through wood, plastics and even mild steel.

They have also been known to cause fires by chewing through wiring.

Try check your pantry and look for bite marks on food packaging
Simple inspections of these common signs will help you detect any rodent issues in your home before they become a serious problem.

Signs of rodents in your home can be a serious wake up call of what exist that you may not even see first hand.

Store bought traps may seem like a solution for the do it yourself type. The Harsh reality is they only capture a small percentage of rodent infestations. You may think your saving money but in the long run you may end up spending more and worsen your situation.

Kill one Kill them all!

With the size and mobility of rodents perhaps you catch a couple with store bought traps this does not solve your long term problem.

Rodents naturally are bait and trap shy and can get through the smallest entry points on your property. We at One Two Tree don’t only solve your immediate infestation we take the necessary action to ensure they don’t come back.

Giving back to our community can be done in many ways. For One Two Tree the idea of giving back has been a conscious decision to do so by helping to promote and support meaningful local events and organizations.

One Two Tree is celebrating its 26th year offering certified tree and palm trimming, as well as, tree, palm, lawn and landscape healthcare services and pest control. Owner Marc Terwilliger said, “I credit much of our long-term growth and success to the loyal customers that have been using our services for decades”. “They are all part of our One Two tree family and if we can lend support to events and causes that are near and dear to their hearts; I feel it’s important to do so”.

onetwotree truck

Many of the company’s assets are valuable to local events. The company’s tree trimming division has several bucket trucks they have donated for purposes of hoisting event photographers high above the starting line and crowds of the annual Miami Corporate Run, the Cystic Fibrosis Great Strides fund raiser and the Susan G. Komen Race For A Cure breast cancer awareness event (Terwilliger’s wife is a cancer survivor). The company’s pest control and spray division have provided products and services to Miami-Dade County’s Chapman Field baseball parks and other park facilities of local municipalities. The One Two Tree name can be seen on the jerseys of a Palmetto Bay Broncos little league team as a result of providing financial support. The Miami Marathon, The Corey for St. Jude’s Golf fund raiser, The Walk 4 Friendship, The Fairchild Gardens Ramble, The ING/Miami Marathon and many more events and organizations have meaningful connections to our customers and therefore are important to the One Two Tree family.

There seems to be a trend taking shape and it’s worrisome.

Itrees-vs-home-insurancen the last 6 months I’ve been contacted 5 times to evaluate the risk being posed by tree branches and palm fronds overhanging, or in close proximity to, the roof of a house.

In each case the calls were prompted by a letter the home owner received from their insurance company.

In four of the cases the letters instructed home owners to have tree branches removed and in one case it was requesting all palm fronds be removed from one side of each, of two royal palms.

What’s interesting about this is, in every case, if what the insurance company was requesting had been complied with the trees and the palms would have posed an increase in risk, rather than less of a risk.

As a Certified Arborist, I have no more business telling a customer how to make decisions about what kind of insurance they should have than an insurance company has requiring a customer to trim trees and palms to their liking.

Trees Increasing Miami Home Insurance?

If the idea is to reduce risk and decrease the insurer’s liability than they might as well require the tree be removed.

Trees pose a risk. Mature trees that have been neglected typically have dense canopies that create a “sail” effect and are the most likely to fail against storm force winds, blowing over and damaging a home or other property.

Healthy and properly maintained trees pose a minimum of risk to the property.  In order to be a healthy tree, a tree needs pruning, thinning and removal of dead wood to maintain a proper branching structure.

Branches are needed for a dampening effect during high wind events.

Trees-Increasing-Miami-Home-Insurance?

Any tree that is tall enough to have branches overhanging a single story roof is certainly a fairly mature tree.

Removing healthy lower branches can result in a “top heavy” tree. Removing any healthy branch can affect the structural integrity of the tree and result in large wounds that increase the tree’s susceptibility to damaging decay, pest and disease.

University of Florida has done extensive research on the impact of hurricanes on urban trees.

One study had the goal of determining, what makes a tree more wind resistant?

Among many of the lessons learned was, trees that had been pruned properly survived better and sustained less damage than poorly pruned or unpruned trees.

In fact, more trees fail in hurricanes due to poorly drained soils, compacted soils, compromised root systems and numerous other factors that have to do with trees not having proper anchoring, rather than some branches overhanging the roof!

A certified arborist is trained to evaluate and make decisions about the risk presented by trees and how branches can be pruned instead of removed.

Many options exist. Descending branchlets can be removed from a primary branch.

A branch with heavy end-weight can be “thinned”. Crossing or rubbing branches can be trimmed or may even warrant removal.

Trust the experts, call an arborist!
